Critical gotchas

GitHub recommends an Accept: application/vnd.github+json header and an explicit X-GitHub-Api-Version header.

Fine-grained tokens only authorize repositories and permissions selected when the token is created.

cURL

curl -X GET 'https://api.github.com/repos/example-owner/example-repo/git/trees/example-tree-sha?recursive=example-recursive' \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $GITHUB_TOKEN" \ -H 'Accept: application/vnd.github+json' \ -H 'X-GitHub-Api-Version: 2026-03-10'

Parameters

Name In Type Required Description
owner path string Yes The account owner of the repository. The name is not case sensitive.
repo path string Yes The name of the repository without the `.git` extension. The name is not case sensitive.
tree_sha path string Yes The SHA1 value or ref (branch or tag) name of the tree.
recursive query string No Setting this parameter to any value returns the objects or subtrees referenced by the tree specified in `:tree_sha`. For example, setting `recursive` to any of the following will enable returning objects or subtrees: `0`, `1`, `"true"`, and `"false"`. Omit this parameter to prevent recursively returning objects or subtrees.
