Critical gotchas
GitHub recommends an Accept: application/vnd.github+json header and an explicit X-GitHub-Api-Version header.
Fine-grained tokens only authorize repositories and permissions selected when the token is created.
cURL
curl -X GET 'https://api.github.com/users/example-username/packages/npm/example-package-name/versions' \ -H "Authorization: Bearer $GITHUB_TOKEN" \ -H 'Accept: application/vnd.github+json' \ -H 'X-GitHub-Api-Version: 2026-03-10'
Parameters
| Name | In | Type | Required | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| package_type | path | string | Yes | The type of supported package. Packages in GitHub's Gradle registry have the type `maven`. Docker images pushed to GitHub's Container registry (`ghcr.io`) have the type `container`. You can use the type `docker` to find images that were pushed to GitHub's Docker registry (`docker.pkg.github.com`), even if these have now been migrated to the Container registry. |
| package_name | path | string | Yes | The name of the package. |
| username | path | string | Yes | The handle for the GitHub user account. |
